Respect Thy Elders - Lifetime Achievement Award for my Dad

This is a personal post… Like the old saying goes “respect your elders” - but often by the time you start to understand what this means it can be too late or even difficult to do it properly. Well, here’s a personal chance for me, in a small way, to show some respect to my father Harry Fuller. He was originally an old media guy working in TV broadcast news in San Francisco (for the likes of CBS and ABC) starting in 1969. However, he definitely gets new media/digital and helped launched innovative web sites for CBS in early 1995! You can seeĀ his currentĀ short profile on ZDNet where he is blogging today on green technology (ahead of the curve for sure on this subject area!). He also has a quality bird blog and birding web site.

The great news is that he’s getting a lifetime achievement award for his TV career this weekend from the NorCal RTNDA, to you and me this = Radio-Television News Directors Association of Northern California [here's the pdf of the event]. Awesome stuff and very well deserved!

This is a great post, Dylan. I sort of follow a different drummer than your dad, specifically, Satchel Page, living by his maxim, “Don’t look back something could be gaining on you”. Unfortunately, at our age, we KNOW what’s gaining on us, even if we don’t look back.

Congratulations for the well-deserved recognition. Harry is a great birder and a good guy to know.

I had the good fortune of meeting Harry shortly after his move to Oregon. His reputation had preceeded him, and I wanted to see what he was all about. I can assure all you CA folks that he continues to be a high energy, enthusiastic and personable good guy; he has taken on a leadership role in local birding circles and is a positive force in the community of southern OR birders. I didn’t know him during his working days, but I’m certain his people skills had a lot to do with his success. A well deserved award!

I have become an avid fan of Harry’s from reading his daily birding blogs, and recently had the good fortune to meet him and his wife Kate. He and his blogs are a match: warm, witty and intelligent. And judging from his bio he put the same talents into his media work.

Congrats Harry on your achievement award and for raising a son who so thoughtfully sings your praises!

Congratulations Harry. Like Dick Ashford, I meet Harry in southern Oregon birding activities. I enjoyed working with Harry in a recent training class for beginning birders offered through Audubon. I can attest to Harry’s dilegent preparation. Bob Black
